What I admire about some of these posts is that riders actually have time to think about how best to place the bike while dealing with a puncture. When I puncture (which is often) I'm usually so hot, bothered, wet, cold, presssed for time and generally frazzled that I rush through the business as fast as I can, and incidentals like protecting the saddle or the brake levers are the last things I would think about. Inevitably it has to be done in a wet, muddy gateway. Tyre levers, gloves, sunglasses and miscellaneous bag contents are scattered hither and yon, often to be irretrievably lost in the mire in the haste to get the job done and under way again. For what it's worth, it's never occurred to me to do anything other than invert the bike, and I can't remember saddle, cables or anything else on the bike itself (other than my temper) ever coming to any serious harm as a result.

This is why cycling with a buddy is a good idea. One of you can hold up the rest of the bike while the other one punctures the spare tube with the levers.
