What do you get from more expeisnve wheels

I've just FUBARd my rear wheel on a turbo trainer, so need to invest in a new one.

What do you gain from spending a few extra quid on a wheel?

The hub should last longer though that can't always be said for the rim,the wheel should be built better ie stronger and stay true if hand built and spokes tensioned correctly.

Also, quite a lot of wheelbuilders put their sticker on a wheel, and if you need to go back years later, even for accident damage they have a different attitude to somebody coming in with a machine-built wheel. In that case, I think they are much more likely to suggest buying a replacement wheel. (Is FUBAR a technical term? )

You get a lighter wallet.
Buy good quality components, get a copy of Brandt, read it thoroughly at least 3 times then build your own. Over the years you'll save thousands & have a more reliable bike into the bargain.

Jobst Brandt writer of the definitive book "the Bicycle Wheel" (basically how to build a decent wheel)

PW I agree building your own wheels is very rewarding. I have built up four 26" wheel however I have problems getting hold of spokes (suitable for 700c) at a reasonable price - any good sources?

Call Spa Cycles on 01423 887003. (The levels of communication technology and price may not be unconnected!)

Yes I use Spa Cycles for that. They carry Sapim Strong for the rear drive side  and they're cheap & very helpful. Usual disclaimer.
