You are much more tolerant than me! All of your information was factually correct, I can't understand any objection to what you've said.
To answer the courtesy question. I always pull to the left when safe to allow traffic to pass, but otherwise occupy the primary. Am I on my cycle or driving an HGV?

I ride in about the middle of the lane, my son to my left - he's young and lacks full road sense, so I prefer this arrangement. Having joined the road it's always reasonably busy so there's a car behind in short order. It doesn't seem in a hurry to overtake, and is I think holding back, missing an overtaking opportunity - perhaps he doesn't like to pass in this sort of residential zone, or perhaps he's mindful of the small boy (9), albeit that he's being shepherded by me.
I ride in this sort of protective position behind my daughter. I have also asked my husband to ride in that position behind me on the tandem (loaded with kids). I think it makes sense, though drivers sometimes perceive it as an additional wind-up.
