Rohloff sprocket tool - York area?

Post by rustychain »

I'm the proud owner of a second hand Rohloff. I'd like to turn the sprocket around on the wheel, but at the moment I can't justify the expense of a tool that I'll use so infrequently (I'm broke after the initial outlay!).

I don't suppose there's someone in the York area that would be willing to help me get the sprocket off?

Thanks in anticipation

is the little blighter in question, need one of these and a chain whip.

It looks just like an old freewheel remover, except it is larger. It is 24mm across the spanner flats.

cheers

If it's any consolation it slides nicely into place and is well-engineered, and is only £13 more than a Park FR6C . Do you need to turn the sprocket btw? With a non-derailleur bike it doesn't matter so much how snaggle-toothed and stretched everything is as long as it all stretches together. Especially if you do this: http://sheldonbrown.com/chain-life.html

The sproket teeth have been worn on one face by the previous owner. Not horrendous, but clearly warn.

As I'm starting off with a new chain and chainring, I figured turning the sprocket around would be almost as good as a new sproket (certainly better than using the worn face from the start).

I may have to consder buying the tool - at least it should last a lifetime for the few times it will get used. :D

I've only test ridden the hub in the street. If I power down on the pedals there is a grinding noise from the chain - is this because I haven't got the allignment quite right?

if the sprocket is hooked enough it'll make a noise. Don't panic just yet!

Yes that sounds like the sprocket and chain are not meshing. Good idea to change both.

Finally got the sproket turned around (delay due to bike shop breaking the hub and it having to be sent off for repair).

There's still a noise if I power down. New chain and sprokets fitted. Chain alignment is as good as I can get. Any ideas?

I didn't have much success when I turned the sprocket as I think I had left it too late. The teeth were wave crests and quite pointed. So in the end I bought new chain, chain ring and sprocket after about 12,000 miles. I first tried new sprocket and chain but then realised a new chain ring was needed ... Then all meshed beautifully.
