I live in Cornwall which as we all know is much milder than most of the rest of the country but is it normal in other parts for postmen to wear shorts all year round? Nearly all of our postmen wear shorts what ever the weather

Are these cycling posties or man in a van. Our postie in Staffordshire wears trousers. He also regularly crashes into people and claims he was going 10MPH. I drive no more than 20MPH and have never had a problem. I've seen him go 30! Grrr....

Anyway, sliding off topic. Nope, don't see many. However, I was happily wearing shorts cycling to Uni in December but was back to joggers in January.

Ours always does even if snow on the ground (in Hertfordshire).

It's about 50/50 here in somerset. I think there's something macho about it and they are trying to outdo each other. Some even wear short sleeved shirts as well despite the temp being below zero even the postladies !

I believe our postie dresses as a Ninja warrior. That's how he can come up the path post a note telling me he has tried to deliver a parcel and get back to his van without me seeing him, even though I'm in the living room. He is probably identifiable as the Ninja postie wearing running spikes.

That's interesting, I thought it was only our daft lot. Only know one lady postie and she wears shorts. By the way I work in a Post Office so I get to see many of them

Our post lady wears shorts, so do her male colleagues - in fact one chap always wears a beanie hat too. All drive vans.

Our Lollipop Man wears sandals and shorts all year too - and his yellow coat of course!

In my area all the postmen have a bet on to see who can stay the longest in shorts, I think this must go up and down the country

Our regular postman - Alan, who must be one of the most helpful people on the Royal Mail payroll - never wears them, athough plenty of the others do. Not many vans (1?) on local deliveries but the aims seems to be to see if it's possible to get the engine and gearbox to drop out altogether.

Same here. A few of our Posties wore shorts right through the snowy week we had. Apparently, legs are easier to dry than trousers on wet days, and waterproofs just make them sweat and overheat.

Time was when postmen wore a smart uniform as did ambulance drivers and police officers.

During the very cold spell a few weeks ago I saw a postie in shorts delivering on foot. I was in my car  and the outside temperature was -6

A lot of van driving posties don't realise there are more than 1st and 2nd forward gears available to them

When visiting relatives in Hants the short wearing posties were pointed out to me. There had apparently been something in the Southern Evening Echo about a contest between them to wear shorts throughout the year.

Mentioning the local rag. When I was a lad delivering the paper around Hedge End and Botley there was a poser that went. If you had a poo up a mountain and had no toilet paper what would you do? Answer. Shout for help and wait for the Echo.

I had a parcel delivered by the Royal Mail this morning - not the usual van driver and he was in shorts, showing that the whole of one leg was covered in tattoos 8)

(That's the smilie for "cool" - there isn't one for "freezing")
