Re:London to Rome
I have been looking at the Santiago route from
St Malo and I already know the back roads of for example the top michelin map (232?).
It looks to me that my own route for the journey is probably as good if not better than the one purveyed by "people who have done it before or first"
Good map reading is the best answer to a safe and enjoyable journey.
In France the michelin one to 2km are quite good enough to provide you with rural roads all the way through that country. You have to take the D roads otherwise you get snarled up, even if it means going ten km further sometimes to get to a straight road for 80km.
don't forget that you can piece together the route from Stanford's Books and maps shops who have all the maps that you can possibly need for the whole route.
I use on front saddle bag for maps alone; usually about a dozen for 1500km.
Stanfords take cards; phone and tell them what you want.

Re:London to Rome
Gar if you are contemplating cycling to Santiago from St Malo I did it last year.
Have a look at my website
www.tapan.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk.
I have also a word document which gives a fairly detailed route ( including daily overview maps) that I took all the way. It is quite a big file but if you are on broadband I can send it to you as an attachment to an email.
my address is
tapan@deleteblueyonder.co.uk and obviously delete "delete"
I camped all the way through France starting on 6 April.
Fantastic trip but Spain was fairly awful weather with several days in snow at times.

Re:London to Rome
I am also interested in cycling routes to Rome since I am considering a pilgrimage to Rome next year.
Especially routes over/through or round the Alps!
They are a lot higher than some of the routes I took through the Pyrennees last year!

That may not be any different from Pedallingpetes link above but it is crucial to get from Canterbury to dover in one piece. Here is the map.
London to Canterbury is a waymarked and mapped sustrans route, so there is no problem there.
So you have got off road and side road all the way to Dover now!

That gives you all the towns to look for.
All you have to do then is get the Michelin 1:250000
maps of France. about five will take you on the back roads all the way to Rome
Be careful not to see too much light and salvation on the way. It gets some people like that.

Re:London to Rome
What would be the most amazing journey ever ridden would be to take the train back to Placenza after reaching Rome and then to take the Pilgrim's route across S France and Spain to Santiago,
train or bus back to Santander back to Plymouth by ferry.
How about that Pinky when you log in?
