Come back, Baron Tebbit!

I see that the prospect of a strike by petrol delivery drivers has got the govt., in a bit of a mess over the correct advice.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-17545258Where's Norman Tebbit when you need him?
A perfect opportunity for a bit of promotion of the benefits of cycling.

I cannot believe the idiocy of the ministers. Keep a jerry can in the garage?

This is the government's advice?
I hear that sales of jerry cans have gone through the roof - perhaps they may go through the roof in an explosive way too!

Perhaps I'm wrong but I thought it was bad practice to store petrol in a steel container due to the risk of sparks (which is why I threw away my Paddy Hopkirk steel can ages ago and replaced it with a 10-litre plastic one from Halfords).

I put a post about this on my local paper's forum. I pointed out how good it would be if there was a serious fuel shortage, with reduced numbers of motor vehicles making cycling more pleasant. I was being slightly tongue in cheek, but surprisingly so far most of the other posts have been supportive

Thirdcarnk you are so 1980s this lot have updated to mode of transport for the peasants. Not long ago one of them said "Get on the bus" (I wonder if they are guaranteeing fuel supplies for them).
I am doing my bit and hording fuel as Cameron said. Last week I filled the car and have done 11 miles in it since then.
Glad the PM reminded me to pick up more fuel

Quite right. It's perfectly logical to stock up when there's a chance of a shortage. 'Panic' is when you forgot to do it and there's none left.

Patrick I can not take credit for thinking about it. I mistakenly started to refuel with unleaded not diesel, I realized after 8 litres. So I had to fill the tank completely to water it down so to speak.
Luckily the old Discovery will run on just about anything.
I liked the fact that the govt advice was to store more fuel at home in cans than is legal as opposed to use the car less. The must need the extra VAT gained from the increase to stock up the House of non Commoners bar again.

Makes me wonder who is pulling who's bicycle chain?
Now should I follow govt advice and top my fuel tank up or go on my bike with a Gerry Can?

Perhaps the entire tory leadership, past and present is going to freeload off David Cameron's freebie CTC membership.

Lets hope we don't get to the same situation as the last fuel strike. At a local Garage an elderly gentleman was trying to fill up plastic domestic kitchen bucketsand carry them home inthe foot well of his car.
I have half a tank of fuel and when its gone its gone. WE are inthe fortunate position we can walk to the shops and cycle anywhere further so I'll leave the fuel to those that need it.

An altruistic gesture that is doomed to failure. The greedy people will just grab it all to fuel their gas-guzzlers to attend a Pony Fair for there dear darling daughter on the other side of the island.
I filled up the tank of my diesel in the hope that we have a fuel crisis based on panic alone (with help from Francis Maude

) I cant believe it is 12 years since the last one, it was such bliss, this was a fantastic place to be when the traffic stopped. I wasnt even a cyclist then but I thought it was great. Despite having a car and two motorbikes with full tanks I left them standing out of sympathy for those without. I do hope for a repeat of it.

It's alright you for you lot. I've got my Mother in Law stopping and I need a full tank to get her home.
Let's have some sympathy please - some of us are in dire need

I'm down to 3 bars on the fuel gauge, which I estimate will be used up by the end of next week on the work commute.
So I'm digging out the fuel canisters and filling up this w/e. May even consider the idea of pouring in a few bottles of Mazola to see what that does. Anyone for chips?
