Sounds rather like a disillusioned Sheffield Wednesday supporter I heard of  After the latest thrashing he nailed his season ticket to the football ground gates. A while later he relented & went back on the off chance it might be still there. It was - but someone had stolen the nail.

There you go fatboy, and I thought I was unique.

As for comparative values MickF - no, that's not it, I had a new tandem which was worth more than a lock which obviously didn't work.

I realise this is an old thread, but I do not see an accepted answer.

I have seen cases where the bike has been removed and the lock remains after the Local Authority has removed a derelict bike. Maybe others could confirm having seen this or that it is a policy in with some Councils. (Or if not an official Council policy just a lot quicker removing a bike by cutting the frame than it is to sever a lock/chain/shackle)

What could be more natural than a lonely lock fastening itself to a bicycle stand or suitable railing, in the hope that it might be joined by another lock in the not too distant future.

We went on holiday to Italy last year and on a trip into Rome, the guide said something about a tradition of lovers securing a padlock to the railing of a bridge as a sign of their neverending love, then throwing the key into the river. Aaahhh
