if some scrappy with a long jemmy reckons they can prise off the two extra locks, i haven't heard of anything. i'll have a look around to see if anyone has managed to break in besides using a forklift or hydraulics.
in theory you can't get a better type. a 4 lock system would be better but two will be enough. put the lock at the lowest point possible.
thirdcrank - most garages with us are basically the old 1960's and 70's as well. probably the springs would have been worn and rusted and brittle over the years given the impression of movement and flimsy.
colin's lock will do the job too - but is a fiddle. i suppose someone could open the garage and exit, go back round through the other door and lock it back up. so you have to enter the backdoor again when coming back, unlock, go back round park and lock up again. as long as the padlock is solid
it seems odd looking back to the days when people locked their garages with a padlock on the outside.

Re: Very Long Lenght of Padlock Cable.
Many different things affect whether a burglary occurs and ultimately it's probably luck. I think some burglars target certain types of thing - eg only going where they know there are expensive cars; others are more opportunist, eg "working" entire areas, trying doors to see if they are open. If a particular method finds favour, the word soon gets round and it spreads.
All I'm really saying is leave the stuff on display and they may have an incentive, if what you have is likely to be sellable. The easier it is to get in, the more they may do so. Strong security only works when it's properly used, but they'll go for the weakest link anyway. If you aren't a burglar, it's not easy to think like one.

The bolt goes on the outside of the door.....security has to be visible to be a deterrent,
It is just a deterrent....don't make it look like you have something valuable in there, its too easy to just peel back a garage roof!

Re: Very Long Lenght of Padlock Cable.
oh rite. would it be a good idea to have another inside in case they breach the outside?
you know what i'm thinking? if a thief is thwarted with an enfield lock, would they be petty or malicious to drill into the key area preventing the owner from opening? or can it be opened from the inside as well.. it would be a nightmare if they can't open it from the inside in an emergency.
which leads to another problem. if someone has an enfield on the gargae door plus another on the entry door and the burgular wrecks both sets of locks.
if someone is thwarted by the garage door, won't it give them more of an incentive to enter via the smaller door?

if it's too easy to peel back a garage door at the top, four enfield type locks are needed then.. plus the doorhanger trick as a backup.
