I've had a Karakum about three years and I love riding it. I've done a couple of short tours on it and it has carried self and panniers without any faults at all. I had a Dawes Horizon before that which was used for commuting and touring and I wish I had changed earlier. I find the whole drive train much better and the butterfly bars just suit me. It's great being that bit more upright to watch the world go by.
I'm down the Pyrenees with it myself this summer - riding the Camino to Santiago di Compestella. Seems worth adding that I also find it very sure footed descending at speed, although I don't normally use the low riders at the front.
I particularly like the 700x38 tyres too. I don't do much off tarmac riding but I used some NCN routes on canal towpaths just this week and it takes all that nicely in its stride.
I'm afraid I don't know the other bike, but the Karakum gets a good endorsement from me.
