Q about an FAQ

Sorry for being stupid but I can't understand this, especially the words I have underlined:

You can also add a signature by default to all your posts by checking the appropriate radio button in your profile.

You could tick the check button or check the tick button or tick the tick button or check the check button.

Radio buttons click the others off when you click on one of them. Not a radio in sight.

PS I would use tick while you can -it won't last. i've spent hours checking things in the past when they needed to be ticked. (post aimed at Vorpal).

PPS I don't see any radio buttons in the edit profile only in board preferences and these don't relate to the signature. I presume that was the point of your post.

Just to add that the instruction is wrong: you add a signature by writing it in the appropriate section of the profile and then clicking on submit. Furthermore, the reference to "all" is a complete red herring* - there is no other option - it's all or none. Once again, I presume that that (sic) was the purpose of your post.

*Not, I hasten to add, a completely red herring - that's why adverbs are so good.

To clarify, this was a search for information and the only criticism of the the language of the instruction was the one implied when somebody with a reasonable standard of literacy cannot understand it at all.

To summarise, I have prepared a "signature" which now forms part of my "profile." I should like to arrange things so it appears at the foot of my posts automatically, without my having to add it to them individually.

Thanks for that. I'd been round and round menus and sub menus and failed to spot that.

You've now broken my heart, because I've mentioned it - complete with my translation before.

You are right about Magna carta. It roughly means,
We will not appoint justices, sheriffs, bailiffs, or constables except from those who know the law of the realm, and are willing to enforce it properly.
I'm starting a campaign to reintroduce that.

I'm sorry, I was wrong. AFAIR the default was "yes" so even if you never found it it should have worked OK.

To make amends, would you like to know how to put it in a different colour?

Don't worry. It's the Ode to a louse all over again (that's another of my well-worn favourite phrases.) I've quoted the bit from Magna Carta several times on here in one form or another over the last couple of years. it's a salutory reminder that not everything gets read, by any means.

Don't worry either. I had assumed that the signature thing would work like the avatar, but it doesn't. A new avatar goes on existing posts. A new signature doesn't go on anything - unless you check the radio button or use the options at the bottom of the posting screen to put it on an individual post. I'm Ok now. Probably just as well that John Lackland didn't put his name to something saying "We will not permit numpties to use a slate, nor parchment, nor paper, nor yet a computer whenever it shall be invented, within our realm..." (In Latin, of course.)

thirdcrank: great quote anyway and well worth the effort. As you know both the avatar and the signature get "back dated " to all your old posts which I think is a bit strange when you look at them.
