S + S coupling - reinstating

Post by QUIST »

I've a bike with SS coupling one of the reasosn I don't use it as often as I would is that its so fiddly to put back together(tubes).

I've thought about sliding a tube inside the frame ( stiff eg plastic ) to try to help with the alignment - as I'm scared off damaging the threads.

Any ideas anyone tried anything similar?

I've been using my S&S Frezoni since it was built in 1999 and I've completed quite a few 1200+km brevets on 3 continents in that time. Just use the proper teflon grease (much better than ordinary grease for avoiding galling) and keep the couplings clean and tight.

Yeah terrible things just post me the bike and £10 and I'll dispose of it for you ;-)

My small experience of S&S on a tandem was that if you mated the teeth properly with nut backed away from mating thread for a good view of joint then actually you'd have no chance of cross threading - S&S are a relatively coarse thread and as such are fairly resistant to ham fisted operation and are difficult to misalign easily. A 1.5mm pitch means meaty metal for strength and as the maximum possible error is 0.75mm, half the thread pitch, and as that hirth joint (name of the fancy toothing) holding the tubes is better than a tenth of that in any plane you'd really struggle to get it wrong (except by a full tooth around and that isn't damaging). If you did manage to damage one I'd be surprised (and a little bit scared) - but if so send me the bike and £10 and I'll make arrangements to hide the bike forever (I may have mentioned that before...)
