General question about component sizes

Post by Audax Newbie »

As I'm considering getting a new frame and building up a new bike, I have a question that I'm unsure of the answer to...

Are all road bike frames more or less the same in terms of the size of components that can be added?

By that, I mean do all handlebars, forks, etc. have the same size connections?

(I know that seatposts have different sizes.)

Sorry if my question isn't too clear.

Cheers.

:D Hi fellow-builder,

Pick the wheels you want first. There are references elsewhere to mudguards, etc.

Then pick the brake system. Obviously, some of these need compatible frames.

After that, try everything against your frameset before buying it.
What is the colour(s) of your cycle?
Which of its benefits would you recommend?
Please lookup the Bicycle Renewal Programme, linked to the website button beneath "Santa's Little Helper" cartoon.

There are a few potential pitfalls to be aware of, does your new frame have forks with it? if not you'll have two potential steerer tube sizes and headset sizes/types but the frame builder can advise.

The stem needs to be the right diameter for the forks (as above) and the bars which are available in two sizes the larger often called oversize.

The rear hub needs to be compatable with the make and cassette type you want (8/9/10 speed) but buying a complete groupset ensures compatibility.

You'll probably need long drop brakes if you want wide tyres and mudguards.

The seat tube diameter needs the appropriate front mech diameter and slightly different angled mechs may be available.

I shouldn't think that's exhaustive but i hope it helps.
