HI all
Not that I have much option now but I have a 65 miles day on the A82 on Sunday 20 May heading South from south of fort william to Balloch
Just wondered how busy the road is and if these is anything I need to be aware of or could do like an early start ?
Many thanks for your time
Regards
Mike
A82 from Fort William to Balloch how busy ???
Re: A82 from Fort William to Balloch how busy ???
The section through Glen Coe and over Rannock moor is fine but the surface can be lumpy in places.
I found the section by loch lomond a bit hairy at times as its so narrow for the traffic that uses it.
Towards the bottom end the cycle path has a good surface so I would recommend using that.

I've used it twice going North, no problems. I was mindfull of the dificulty that traffic has getting past, so I'd pull over every now and then and let it through. I think the worst part is just north of Tarbet as the road twists between the rock side and Loch Lomond, but thats only for a few miles. Keep an eye out for the logging lorries, there are quite a few, sometimes it appears they are close but realisticly no closer than any any other HGV on a narrow road.
Some great views from Rannoch Moor, keep an eye out for the views behind you that you might miss
As you come off the moor there used to be a burger van in a lay-by then you've got a good down hill run for a few miles
Enjoy the ride

How cliche !!!
Politicians are wonderful people as long as they stay away from things they don't understand, such as working for a living.

I've ridden it both ways - on a Sunday going South and, I think, a Tuesday going north - both times in early June - no big deal.
The Crianlarich - Loch Lomond bit is a bit narrow in parts but motorists seem to be pretty tolerant (after about Luss there's a good cyclepath to the east side of the road) ... when you get to Balloch the Sustrans path along the canal is fine for touring/road bikes all the way into Glasgow - fast and traffic free, very few barriers.
