Having installed a tracking cookie detector (Ghostery) following tips from other forum users, it normally shows no tracking cookies on the forum.

However this thread has set it off, why is that?

Dunno - my tracker blocking software doesn't register anything when I look at that thread.

I guess it may relate to something already on my computer, it doesnt matter, I was just curious.

Beyond the obvious objection to being snooped on, are their any other problems with tracker cookies? The only manifestations of these I see are. first, when the anti-virus software removes them and then, when I visit some sites and before the anti-virus has done the housework, I'm plagued with ads for things I looked at. These are just a waste of time since by then I've invariably made up my mind and either bought some version of the item or decided to forget it.

Am I missing something obviuos?

It is mainly the obvious resentment of these people "taking liberties".

However a nice side effect is that all the on screen advertising disappears leaving your computer free to do what you asked it to.
No longer do I have a flashing reminder to service my Renault when I look at the weather forecast. When your broadband speed is still sometimes measured in kilobytes you dont like to see it wasted.

I guess they have potential to slow down your computer.

I do find that some sites are very slow. I normally only use the Halfords site for car stuff and similar, I do find it inordinately slow - are you suggesting that that's because of the cookie traffic?

Cookies are unlikely to make a significant difference in themselves - they are only small text files. What may make a difference is once the cookie gets read there is a lumbering database in the background of the website doing stuff. In my experience slow website are, more often than not, caused by too many bells & whistles for the fancy graphics having to load or sometimes you've just got in the slow lane of the information superhighway - changing lanes by hitting the refresh button can often help in those instances (but is definitely not a universal panacea  ).

In my coal-powered sort of way, that's what i had always assumed. I'll revert to "somnulent posture" mode.
