EMERGENCY - deraillier hanger needed asap

Post by lkbc »

Hi

We are in the thrust of a LE-JOG tandem bike ride and our deraillier hanger has snapped and we are having difficulty finding one. We need this asap as we have our route planned and need to get going asap.

Our bike is a tandem Dawes Galaxy Twin 2006 model. We can send photos if necessary of the part.

Can ANYONE help us..

I'm not familiar with your frame model but I assume the hanger is part of the actual dropout, rather than a replaceable one. (If it is a replaceable one then Dawes stockists should have them.)

If it is part of the dropout, the only way to get it properly repaired would be a decent framebuilder.

Alternatively, once upon a time, all derailleurs came with a separate hanger which was clamped in place by the back wheel nuts or q/r and could be discarded if the frame already had a hanger. More recently, I think it is only cheapo, possibly very cheapo stuff that comes like this. It is the sort of item that a long standing bike shop might have in the bits and pieces box. Or if you are very desperate, cannibalise a cheapo mech.

After posting this I did a google on derailleur hanger (with that spelling.)

Have a look at:

They seem to be the first of several offering them

St John Street Cycles sell the old one that clamps under the rear wheel nut.

It might be worth as a "get you home" fix just buying a cheapo mech with an integral hanger. From any bike shop.

Edinburgh Bicycle Coop sell the type that clamp under the rear wheel nut (if it's a frame integral hanger that's broken off then the replacement should stuill bolt over the top) My Galaxy solos (I have 3) all have separate hangers, so that's probably what it is.

A quick phone call would get one in the mail for next day delivery.

Thanks people, we now have a replacement hanger from Spa cycles and an expensive next day delivery service (Dawes didn't have them). Fingers crossed our trip continues a little more hassle free than it has been...
