chainset/front mech/1chain compatibility

I plan to fit a Stronglight compact chainset to my new bike with an 8 speed chain & cassette. But what front mech can I use? Will a new campag 10 speed front mech work with an 8 speed chain? I will be using Ergo levers. I have been told a 10 speed mech will only work with a 10 speed chain, etc etc.

10 Speed front will certainly work with a *9* speed chain, so I strongly suspect you'll be in luck. It may need "trimming" more frequently when the chain's running out of line but that's no bother. Make sure the mech is the one for a compact - it will shift better than the one for standard 53/39 as the curve of the cage plates is designed to match the chainwheel diameter.
