Last summer we were finally able to cycle the Leh-Manali highway in Northern India and it was fantastic! O.k., there are a couple of negative points to bicycling there such as boring food, loss of breath at high altitude and army truck traffic, but still the scenery made up for all of that. Below are some pictures from the trip and we also posted an information on the route at:

Cycling over the Baralacha La pass.

A bit smoother road than I found in 1965 - no motor vehicles over the Rohtung Pass then, only foot and animal laden traffic and no pollution. Slept on the floor of the Manali tourist office manager's office - great luxury, then slept out in the open on hillside higher up. Things have changed since then. My younger daughter wants me to go back again after all these years with her but I can't get my head around that. I prefer to keep my memories of an earlier India before cheap air travel and guide books. However, I am sure it remains a wonderful experience. For my generation it was a love/hate relationship, really hard graft at times but with some wonderful experiences on the way which remain life long memories.
