Something for <=£20.

Decathlon do an economy range of shorts that are around £10 a pair, i think. I've just bought a pair of their mid-range bibshorts and they were £24.99. That's half the price that other shops are charging, for shorts of similar quality.

Aldi @£7.99 if they've any left from last week. There was another link to reduced cycling gear on here recently - http://www.cycle-clothes.co.uk - (from this discussion) but I've no personal knowledge of their stuff.

I have never had a problem with budget Shorts, they tend to last longer than the top brands and they aren't any slower. I do believe shorts is one area where you pay for the name or even worse pay a premium for Someone else toy use your bum as Billboard

I'm another buyer into the Spegg brand, a pair of bib shorts and 3/4 tights. Both under £30.

If you know someone handy with a sewing machine, buy budget shorts for a tenner AND a chamois / foam insert ( off e-bay ).

Get the chamois / foam insert sewn over the original patch in the cheapo shorts.

You'll be very reluctant to buy shorts over £20 ever again.

I used to bother sewing the chamois insert into plain shorts back in the day when padded shorts were not as available as now.

I no longer bother as last week I bought some body sculptured short from Aldi for £7.99. The material is not as think as my best shorts at over £60 (I got them in a sale for less) the pad is nearly as good. So I recon if I buy loads of the £7.99 they should last as long in total.

The best tip I can give is look for the ones with she sculptured pad.

Depends on the brand - I find the lower-end Specialized ones are normally built to last, for instance. You're still paying extra for the name though. Me, I find budget shorts often have bulky, awkward and ineffective padding so I tend to push the budget up to the £30 mark and look out for sales.

The great thing about budget shorts is that they often don't bother with those stupid and unnecessary silicone leg grippers. (or in my case, "leg hair grippers". Ouch. )

I purchased some karimoor padded shorts from a Sports.com outlet for £8.00 and extremely suprised at the quality and comfort. I commute to work from between 16 and 28 miles a day when I can and find them extremely comfortable and hard wearing.

I once forked out a small fortune for a pair of Assos shorts. They were very comfy and I was very happy with them but then I bought a pair of new Lusso Ladyline shorts for £2.95 from Ebay and found they were equally comfy!
