severn bridge
I'm planning on heading over the border later in summer. Can you cycle over Severn bridge?

Re: severn bridge
yes no problems, did it easily. there is a cycle path you follow on the bridge
Re: severn bridge
Only the old Severn bridge and you can ride either side of it. Not on the carriageway but a separate cycleway.
Riding on the North side is more direct and saves a trip through the most glass strewn tunnel I have ever ridden.

Re: severn bridge
cool. Thanks.
Re: severn bridge
Rather oddly I only feel it moving if I do stop. I dont notice it while I am riding.

Re: severn bridge
Ride on the upstream side as it is more sheltered from the light breeze that comes up the channel.
Re: severn bridge
The north (upstream) side is approached at the Bristol end from M48 J1 off the M48/A403/B4461 roundabout, just by what used to be the service road up the the Aust services (now a conference centre or something, may still have fuel).
At the Chepstow end there's a cycle track alongside the NE side of the A466 from the A48/A466 roundabout, or you can approach the M48 J2 roundabout from Bulwark (grotty suburb) and join the cycletrack where it crosses the approach road. If you approach on the minor road from Newton Green, turn right just after passing under the A466 and there's a hole in the hedge onto the cycle track after 50m or so.

This forum is wonderful!
When I did my first JOGLE, it was way back in 1994 ............... no internet. At least we can ask questions nowadays.
I wanted to ride over the Severn Bridge but I couldn't find out much info, so rather than let it to chance, I headed towards Gloucester. This was fine, because the Malvern Hills YHA was a going concern then.
Since 1994, I've cycled over the SB both ways, and since then, I wouldn't bother again as the Gloucester route is flatter, easier and quicker.

Re: severn bridge
The Severn bridge may not give much of an advantage going North-South
but it is very useful going West-East (even nicer going East-West)
.
Though this weekend I will be doing the loop of crossing the bridge and coming back through Gloucester but the choice between the A40 or A48 back into Wales isnt the nicest choice going.

Re: severn bridge
I'll be heading into Wiltshire in august to the wilderness gathering. Been every year but I thought I'd cycle this year. Not worried about the distance, I'll do it over two days with a wild camp in between
. What I may do on the way back is get the ferry from Ilfracombe to Swansea, that's if its still going?

I don't think it ever got going.
Re: severn bridge
At least if you cycle its free. It costs a small fortune going east-west in a car. The first time we took the bridge after it was finished to visit our good friends in Swansea we nearly got into difficulties by not having enough cash between us to pay the bridge toll! I note however, that the Welsh are so keen to see us away that it costs nothing to cross from Wales - England

I couldn't see the cycle path on your pic as it was originally posted. I presume that's why you edited it. I couldn't ride over there even if you blind-folded me. I'm getting the wobbles just sitting here at home.

The toll booths are there mainly to give refunds to the returning Welsh who didn't like England. No one ever wanted a refund coming out of Wales which is why there are no booths on the other side.
