I've just spent two joyful hours trying to uploading a photo without success to a advert I was going to place in Bikes for sale, apparently my photo is too big. Can anybody explain to a simpleton how to do it please. I've got Windows 7 if it helps. Off now for a blast to Box Hill to clear my head................... thanks in anticipation.

Speaking as one to another, so to speak, I don't know how it works but somebody on here recommended this and it works for me.

http://www.shrinkpictures.com/resize.php

I can't offer any advice on pixels or whatever, but I just shring to 50% and if (rarely) that doesn't work I shrink it again. I don't think I've ever had to have three goes.

Good luck

you need to go into your photo editing software and start by reducing the physical size to 640 x 480, then if that dosn't bring it down sufficiently, image quality to arround 5. it is a bit tricky but once you get the sequence it becomes easy. I always save the altered file with the same name but put a w after it then I know it's been altered for the web

first make sure you know where your picture is. i'll assume you know how to do save as, so do this and make a note of the file name.

now open your browser and go to http://www.tinypic.com. You'll be greated by this screen.

Image

the first stage is to find your file, so go to the "browse" box and go through to find the picture you'd like to upload. Once you've found it simply click on the file and it will input the details in the browse box.
once your file is in the box you next select image from the bulleted options (this should be selected as a default anyway. the from the drop down "resize" menu select "messege board (640x490)" this will give the correct size for forums. Then hit "upload now" and fill in the security questions.

Once this is done you will get this screen:

Image

highlight all the information in the "IMG Code for Forums & Message Boards" box and copy it (either ctrl+C or right click copy) and paste it in the text box on the forum

job done :)

hope this helps

If you want something simple based on your Computer to shrink images Image Resizer is a good free solution (for Windows) that lets you shrink 1 or more images in 3 clicks.

If the photo is stored in "My Documants / My Pictures" file. Go the photo and open it up. Then right click on the photo and there is a menu with "Resize Picture". Select this and you get a "Resize Picture" menu.
I usually select "Large (1024 x 768)". If you save this it will be saved with the word "Large" next to it.
(my photo's usually end up about 76K from an original of 3meg' which is well within the 256K maximum allowed.)
This can then be uploaded as an attachment to your post.

AFAIK that functionality has never been a native part of Windows.

Back in the mists of time (at least in computer terms  ) there was a "Powertoy" (a free addon produced by Microsoft) for Windows XP. It may have worked in Vista (I can't remember) but doesn't work in Windows 7 (particularly not in 64 bit).

Image Resizer that I linked to before installs this right click functionality to all (most) flavours of Windows.

I use Photobucket which is free, and simply uploads the photos as they are on the computer.

I then simply copy and paste the link, I have never had a problem

If you have a Mac, it's even more of a doddle as it's all part of the operating system.

Preview does it easily.
Go to Tools/Adjust Size.
You can change size in inches or centimetres, or even pixles and resolution.

I set my camera to the minimum size setting - 0.3Mpixel before taking the picture. Then it uploads to the forum with no problem. Simples
