OK, I give up! I've been here about a month and still can't work out - or find out - what the different circular icons mean on the left of each post in the forums.

Black is read, Red is unread (hey, I like that
Padlock means locked by admin
An asterisk means I've started or got a comment in that thread
And the little orange/ black indented icon is to go to first unread post - so far so good...
BUT
What does the scrolling icon (red or black) denote?
And a little circle on top of the bigger circular icon?
And the lightbulb/ exclamation icon? (created by admin?)

Edit cos I just worked out the little circle one... it has a sub forum

These are sticky topics that stay at the top of the board where they were created, after they have served their purpose they can either be deleted or unstickied where they will drop down the page as newer replies are made to other topics.

Is it threads with 2 or more pages? Hmmm, but there are some 2 page threads which aren't scrolling...

Well I'm most disappointed with the lack of response to my post I thought there'd be plenty of geeks around these parts who like questions like this

Anyway, after some further research I've decided on a hypothesis that the scrolling icon is triggered when there are 24 posts in the thread. Any other ideas?

I've been on here since October 2010 and still haven't worked out what the scrolling thing is about. Dying to know, it drives me crazy!

more than 24 posts on a topic seems to be the predefined ( and hardcoded ) definition of a "hot topic" = scrolling icon.

There appears to be a phpbb "Modification" which permits the administrator to define the post-count which makes a topic "hot".
I doubt that we would consider installing this, as it adds no significant value to the forum.
This phpbb version of the forum has been running for about five years without it.
