Bamboo frames ! !

Post by Drake »

I'm sure my leg is being pulled on this one . A friend has suggested that bamboo has been used to make cycle frames . My first reaction was to ask him if his medication had been changed recently . But he assures me that this is true . I just think it's another one of his great leg pulls .
But on the other hand, if it is true . . my question would be . . why ? ?

They've been featured several times in the bike magazines, though I've not seen any independent tests.

Forum thread with link to a blog from Bamboo Bike riders.

Is this the same bloke down the pub as told you about multiple sprockets on Sturmey Archer three speeds and Napoleon taking the Eurostar?

He's wrong about Napoleon, they didn't start digging until 1880.

One and the same . He even told me that the EU had passed a directive saying that all carrots were to be of a standard size and shape . Apparently all carrots were to be grown in special shaped moulds to produce a uniform shape . Even i saw through that one . . i mean to say ,how stupid is that .Far to labour intensive . . . isn't it ?

Oh dear ! That's another pint i owe him . I really thought that was a wind up .
I must admit is does a look a nice machine . Would be interesting to find a road test on one .
That makes me want to ask . . have there been any other unusual materials that people have tried to make frames out of ?

At the Halfords city centre race in Oxford recently, one of the stands was Oxford Brookes University, with their Bamboo frames bikes (aluminium dropouts, hemp bound/resin bonded joints), developed by the motorsport department no less!

Calfee even makes a bamboo tandem. Very highly thought of, I gather, and no more expensive than their conventional frames.

Good morning sir,i do hope my comment didn't offend you . I had more than a sneaky feeling that your information was correct . . but i just couldn't help myself . I must admit those wheels do llook good . . but i would have thought pretty labour intensive to produce .
