need advice on biking Corsica to Sardinia!

Post by pss3sel »

Hello!

My two friends and I are going on our first touring holiday in 3 weeks time. We are flying into Bastia in northern Corsica and out of Olbia in Northern Sardinia. We are unsure of our exact route but will probably stick to the East coast of Corscia and plan to arrive in Olbia 10 days later.

Has anyone ever flown out of Olbia and know of any good bike shops we could visit to try and get bike boxes from before our flight home? Could this be a potential problem?

Is there anyone that has done a similar thing that has any tips? Like I say we are very new to the sport so even obvious things I'm sure will be a huge help!

Did this in 2005, flew to Nice and took the ferry to Calvi in Corsica and cycled down to Propriano to get the ferry to Sardinia, then cycled south down the west coast of Sardinia and across the middle and back up the east to Olbia and took the overnight ferry to Livorno and flew home from Pisa.
The east coast of Corsica is the least scenic part of the island so you would be better cycling down through the centre or down the west coast, both of which are exceptionally scenic.

A friend and I flew into Alghero and walked around the top and down the east coast to Olbia. We then took the ferry to the mainland, very highly recommended if you have the extra days as it goes to Citiavecchia (though the one we actually got went to Genova...) and from there its a short trip into Rome. I'd definitely suggest spending a day having a look at Isola Maddelena and Isola Caprera if you can spare the day. In fact theres a really decent camp site on the isola Maddalena near the bridge over to the isola Caprera. I had a very nice squid there though the site was rather windy!. The costa Smeralda is worth a quick look as well, very nice beaches and very expensive yachts.

Definitely recommend the West coast of Corsica.

I'm afraid I can't help with the specific questions.

Good luck - beautiful bit of the world.

I do hope you've checked out and are prepared for the temperatures though - I personally wouldn't do a cycling trip in Sardinia in July or August.

Hope this doesn't sound negative - be careful out there.
