Camping on the Normandy Beaches etc....

Post by sherriffs92 »

Hi Everyone,
I need some help answering a few questions and hopefully you can advise!

I am planning a trip along the Normandy coast visiting the DDay Landing Beaches/Towns with a friend on a bicycle and camping in a tent. Due to us planning the visit in October, none of the campsites are open, so I have tried finding out whether it is allowed to camp on the beaches, forests and fields in or around the towns? If so, would we be able to have campfires (to cook food on) ?

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Wild camping you may get away with, lighting fires you probably won't and lighting fires in a wooded area or forest in France will probably bring a visit from the police as it is illegal and frowned upon.

What's wrong with taking stoves to cook on?

Wild camping in France is illegal. BUT people do do it in remote-ish places but the Normandy beaches are not remote.

Ask in the Mairie if everything seems closed up. Quite often they'll be able to tell you what's available locally and - at least in my local one when I lived there - are keen on simple solutions to simple problems. So if the camping communale is closed they may direct you to a friendly farmer. Of course whether you'll understand the farmer in Calvados is another matter... sometimes I wondered if the farmers there were speaking French at all.

Check out my crazyguy journal....We did it and used municipal and 'free' camping. Well it was actualy 5€ in a famers cow field

Its a great ride, so much to see and if you can pootle along for 10 days like we did then you can visit whatever you like.

Any advice I can give just PM me.........Its simple enough though.
