How can I get 2 bike to Stansted Airport using public transp

Post by CunningFox »

I am off on a cycle trip in June 2005 to Norway.
We are taking our own bikes with us.
I live near Junction 13 of the M1 and fly from Stansted Airport.
I am finding it difficult to get any public transport to Stansted Airport.
NB: We travel out & return on a Sunday.
National Express coaches don’t allow bikes.
I can take the ThamesLink train from Bedford / Flitwick to London OK, however the travel policy on the CTC web site for “one” Stansted Express states “Cycles are not conveyed at any time”.
Can anyone suggest how we can get 2 bike to Stansted Airport using public transport?

Ask a taxi firm to send a "London style" taxi. The two bikes, with front wheels removed, can be fitted behind the driver each pointing the opposite way. There is still plenty of room for the front wheels and bags between you and the bikes. Expect to pay something extra above the basic fare. It saved me after a bolt broke after returning on the European Bike Express.

When I went to NZ and took my bike from Bournemouth National Express did take my bike
BECOZ I was going to Heathrow, and I did not put it in a bike box until I got to the concourse at the airport.

If you can get the bike box and pack it ready for the National Express then your problem would be solved, but if you are going OUT of London
Victoria to Stanstead then you have not got a dog's chance in hell of getting it on the bus without a Box or container of some sort.

Even paying full fare for the bikes as passegers in the coach hold will not persuade them to take
unpacked bikes OUT of Victoria.

Into it for a tip yes but NOT OUT.

How about:
Cycle or taxi to Hitchin(guess 20 miles).
Train to Cambridge.
Change. Train to Stansted.
The national rail enquiry website would provide train times and prices.

OR:
Train Flitwick to Moorgate or Farringdon. (400 yards or 1 mile to Liverpool St respectively.)
Train Liverpol St to Bishops Stortford. Cycle or taxi from there.

Go on Saturday and make a ride out of it.
Is there a YH somewhere near Stanstead?
Bedford to Cambridge.

got to laugh... there are two stations at Yeovil
if you change stations by pedalling, it is 6 hours quicker than the way BR(?) recommends via Southampton. The best bike ride ever! AND it saves £20 fare. 6 Hours and £20 for having a bike. GREAT!

Bedford to Cambridge Fox?

You CAN get the train to Stanstead, but not the Stanstead express, which is a faster service, check the times for the stopping service whic takes a bit longer, but will get you into the airport

I suggest you contact our National Councillor, Mike Stapleton, on 01763 221405. He can probably help.

Oh dear, another problem with this website. It can't accept straightforward html code. To view the CDA Website copy this and paste into your browser command line:-

There is a (good, by all accounts) youth hostel at Saffron Walden.

I've stayed at Epping Forest Youth Hostel then ridden to Cheshunt station for the non-express train to Stansted. Staff told me which train to catch to avoid changing platforms at B Stortford.
Lee Valley Youth Hostel is 2 mins walk from Cheshunt station.
People on a tight budget who have to kip overnight at Stansted (or any airport or station) should check out www.sleepinginairports.com for tips.

Well I looked at sleeping in airports
Helen, and I must say there are some weird places to doss which I had not thought of.

I would endeavour to enjoy the YH or Backpackers
before contemplating such suffering on a station/airport.

By the way my cousin is Vicar Chaplain of Heathrow and if you want the quietest sleep
(no graves there though) imaginable the tripartite chapel is brilliant. It is the quietest place at Heathrow as it is underground. You can be an atheist; it does not matter because they spend so much time arguing about their respective religious corners they welcome just ANYBODY.
Say "Hi" from cousin Gareth if you meet the Rev Thompsett.

If they have a service just join in, in your sleep
(pretend you are praying) or that you belong to the other denomination in the other corner and you are trying to pray.

Don't sleep kneeling or you will wake up with a f******* awful cartilage trouble all thanks to the greater glory of God
