Help! Slippery pedals

Post by archy sturmer »

I recently fitted some vintage style rat trap pedals - grippy bits are all metal.
Very nice but, as I've just discovered, slippery in the wet.
My options seem to be:

Fit toe clips and learn how to use them;

Get shoes with a grippier sole (current ones are just ordinary trainers with not much wear on the 'tread').

Refit my old 'resin' (plastic?) pedals, more grippy but a bit knackered in the bearings.

I need to sort something out by Sunday, when I'm joining a 60 mile CTC ride, and rain is a distinct possibility!

Thoughts and suggestions appreciated
Thanks!

Why not go straight onto SPD's instead of any type of toe clips with or without straps. If you adjust the tension on the pedals you don't have a problem.

The reason I don't fancy SPds (if that's what is often, misleadingly, called 'clipless'!) is that you have to have the special shoes.
Can you get SPD type shoes that you can walk in at all - ie, with the cleats recessed?
The only ones I ever tried were deadly, they turned into skates if you put your feet on anything hard and smooth.

You can get SPD's with recessed soles and they're not expensive either,They're termed as MTB/touring shoes made by Shimano and prices start at around £30.
They're much better than trainers for cycling in and as good for walking in.

The Exustar ones reviewed by CJ recently are excellent - I'm wearing a pair now. Order them from Bike+ & you get the pedals & cleats for a tenner.
If at first you don't succeed - cheat!!
