wide forks are more aero...?
wide forks are more aero...?
Have you noticed? GB track squad are using forks that are about 4" wide near the crown!
They look like they came off an MTB, not a track iron!
Presumably testing has shown that fork blades that run close to disc wheels don't show a full aero benefit because they are running in the disturbed boundary layer of the wheel.
Weird looking though....
Shame VP and JV got DQd....
cheers

Spoiler in thread, not in title?
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

Yes, just watched Hoy get his 5th Gold and looked specifically at the forks.
Virtually parallel to the crown so is it aero dynamic or for strength?

Re: wide forks are more aero...?
I think it is for aerodynamics. I remember reading that tri spoke wheels perform v well in wind tunnel until they are put in a fork, because there is an area of high pressure created. Also remember reading about cadel Evans using a fork with a hole in the blade, presumably to let this air "out" from between the forks. So this looks like a solution to the same issue.
On phone so can't send links but pretty sure the point about trispokes came from a debate between hed and zipp on the my velocity.com website
Seems to be working anyway!!
Cheers

Re: wide forks are more aero...?
The wide-set forks are for stiffness. Team GB have two sets of forks, the wide sprint forks and a pursuit fork with a conventional low-clearance design.

The team pursuiters are using a wide fork too.
I assume the uk sport website is aimed at disinformation

VP using narrow forks in the keiran.

Re: wide forks are more aero...?
Airflow between 'fixed objects' (like fork blades) and spinning wheels is non-intuitive. Sometimes more clearance is less drag.

Pendleton used the wide forks with disc in the team sprint, the narrow forks with a 5spoke in the keirin, Clancy used the narrow forks with a disc in the omnium flying lap. I think they're playing mind games . . . .Steveo2020 wrote:Forgot to look today - too excited!
