I'm assuming the ARD is an "extra" fitted at the same time as the towball socket, not the original "tick tock" which is normally mounted with the relays under the dashboard?
If so, it must be fed from the wire in the original wiring harness that supplies the right indicator bulb, so you have to trace this wire* and find the new wire spliced in.
Then you can bypass just the ARD which I (and you?) suspect is the faulty component.

Try, using pins, shorting out relevant wires. Take a piece of spare wire and two pins. Push a pin through each end of a circuit wire and attach the test wire to each pin. This will prove if the existing wire has a break in it if the test wire makes the unit work.
Also make sure the bulb has a good earth as this can give funny results.

I had a similar problem. Is your earth connection up to the job? Mine could not cope and was replaced with a better connection. Problem in my case solved.
