You could also consider a 2nd hand MTB frame. You can get a high-quality steel or titanium non-disc rigid frame very cheaply. I think I paid £30 for my M-Trax titanium frame, then built a bike onto it.
Beautiful! This also has the advantage of perhaps being slightly less of a theft risk than a new LHT or Sherpa or whatever, if it's to be a day-to-day bike also.

Thank you. It cost me around £500 all in not including bags, and that is with XT gears & brakes, and a handbuilt wheelset on LX hubs from Spa. I already owned the saddle, rear rack and Time pedals. Frame, forks, headset, stem and seatpost came together for £30 off Retrobike. Bars were a cheapo Ebay special. Shifters, derailleurs, brake levers and purple bottle cage from Retrobike. Almost everything else (inc. Schwalbe Marathons) from Spa.

just a quick question - why 26" wheels?
Convention? what's that then?

I would second building up a tourer from an MTB. I purchased a Spec Rockhopper, had it sandblasted and powder coated. It had rear rack mounts on and I fitted a front rack from OMM. It performed admirably over the Way of the Roses although I only covered 230 miles. The rear rack was a Thorn and I had new wheels built, sourced most parts NOS from ebay and it probably cost around £4.00 but an equivalant spec tourerwould cost over a grand.

Cheers barbelfisher.

check out this blog:-

This guy built a tourer with Van Nicholas frame (scroll for pics)
Titanium is supposed to be lighter and a better ride (so I have been told)
I think you can get a frame with a front fork for about £1100
