1984 Moulton AM7 question

I have the 9-30 7 speed cogs on my bike. I am considering trying to
set them up as indexed but wonder if anyone has tried this?
Was it successful? None of the individual cogs are ramped but the 3
small ones seem to be "twisted" , does this cog set index or do you
always have to over-shift?
If indexing is possible, what's the cog spacing ? 5mm ? And what
shifter should be used with drops ?
Sorry for so many questions but if someones been through this all
before it would be a great help.

Steve,
I have done all that can be done on an AM! The fitment you have is AM original. It cannot be altered in any way at all other than replaced with AM supplied parts. No indexing is possible. The only way is to build or buy a new rear wheel with a cassette fitted with either 7-8 or 9 speed. Then fit indexed shifters, rear mech...............etc.
You can get all this done for a suitable price. Best look out for a wheel first.
No I sold mine.sorry.
John.

Your existing freewheel set-up is obsolete. It used a Regina 5-speed freewheel, with two small sprockets brazed onto the Regina smallest one to form a three-sprocket "cluster". It was not indexable.
Your best bet is to change to a freehub. The Shimano Capreo has a cassette that goes from 9 to 27 teeth. Another solution has been to use an 11-28 cassette with the lockring replaced by a 10 tooth sprocket- this is what I have at the moment, but the 10t sprockets are like hens' teeth, and may no longer be available.

You should be able to index with Suntour Accushift 7 levers.

I can second the recommendation for the Moulton Yahoo Group for technical advice like this. I also agree that your best option is a new rear wheel built around a Capreo hub and cassette plus new 9 speed shifter and derailleur, unless you're desperate to keep it period correct rather than functional. I think the drop-out width can accommodate the Capreo hub without major surgery - I know you can get a compete answer at the Yahoo Group.
