Dunwich Dynamo

Post by peter236uk »

I am planning on doing this ride this year I was going to ride with some mates but they have bottled it so doing it on my own I would not mind riding with someone so if anyone fancies it or is doing the ride and I can tag along.

I guess I would like to do 12 to 15mph !!

hello Peter236uk,

I was tempted by your invitation until I had a look at the D'Dynamo website and then it became apparent - riding through the night and some of it in London.

Perhaps I do too much commuting in the dark during the winter months ( S.W. London ) so this don't appeal to me but good luck all the same.

You'll probably make friends at the start by the Pub in the Park, failing that there'll be plenty of chat along the way.
If at first you don't succeed - cheat!!

Hopefully it won't be too dark, due to the full moon. Was overcast last year though.

I'd be happy to meet for a chat in the park, but agreed the best thing is to make friends along the way, there's just about always bike lights visible ahead and behind.

I'm doing it again this year, and bringing my dad along this time. It has to be one of the friendliest rides there is and, with an expected turnout of over 700 riders, you'll have no trouble finding someone travelling at your own pace and riding with them.

Personally I'm a little reluctant to agree to riding this kind of distance with people I've not ridden with in the past. I did this last year on the DunRun and pushed myself too hard to match others' pace. I was completely exhausted by the mid-point. Given that it was only 15 miles from where I was living at the time, I could easily bail out, but I'd have hated still having 60 miles to do through the rain at that point... That was my third time on the ride too...

So, take it easy on the first leg and hook up with someone who is travelling at YOUR pace would be my advice. Otherwise, if you see someone in glasses with a red Condor Fratello, a (too) big carradice saddlebag and solidlights, shovelling dried bananas into his face, that'll be me (or one of the other 700!) so say hello.

Great ride it was! My first Dynamo at the age of 63 and got there on my faithful Galaxy at 5.55, very very wet. Will be back next year, health permitting.

Regarding the train mentioned above, there were 22 bikes on it! The lady guard had aperplexy (understandably - only 4 spaces) and told us it would never happen again! She also told us at Ipswich that One Railway was a cycle friendly company. Then were were not allowed to get on the connecting train to London, but ushered onto the following one. She also advised us to book in future, but sadly you can't book on that line at weekends. How they expect to manage the situation when you can't book defeats me.
