Carpal Tunnel surgery

Anyone had this minor procedure done? I´m due to get it done in a couple of days time on my Left wrist (I´m left handed) after suffering problems for the past 5 years or so especially when cycling. I´ve been told I shouldn´t drive or cycle until stitches are removed and it feels comfortable. Stitches will be removed somewhere between 7-10 days. I´ve also read that it could be 6 weeks before being fit for manual type work! It´s a few weeks since I saw the consultant and questions have really only come to mind as the surgery is rapidly approaching.
I appreciate that nerve feeling and pain is different for everyone but if anyone out there has had this procedure done it would be good to hear when you were able to cycle on road and on trails as I have a on-trail cycle trip planned and booked in the not too distant future! It would also be good to know how much pain and discomfort I´m likely to get in the days immediately following. You can probably read from this I´m a little apprehensive!

Every case is possibly, I am sure differant. I had this done privately to L/H about five years ago and wish I had not. Doctor convinced me that the nerve respose was differant to the R/H. Lot of pain and discomfort after the operation and took about three months to be able to use hand again and after all that time I still get a pulling sensation and soreness from the palm of the hand sometimes. Strength in the hand is no better but can cycle ok. Colleague of mine had both hands done two years ago and feels the same as me. Now see the specialist driving about in a bigger Merc and often think did I pay for some of that. I am sure this is not what you wanted to read, but you did ask. Good luck

I had it done a few years ago. It's nothing to worry about :)
You'll more than likely be awake during the op but won't really feel anything. Afterwards, you'll need to keep your hand elevated (through a sling) or it will feel like the blood is trying to push the stitches out (uncomfortable at worst).
You'll be able to wiggle your fingers a couple days after and might even be able to pick up light items. I personally was back to woodworking on a limited scale within a week and a half.
Can't remember how long it was before the stitches were out but not long and again no real pain.
My mum had the op about two weeks ago and she's coping quite well also.
I'd say you'll be back on the bike within 2-3 weeks if you take it easy. Just don't fall off! :)

Thanks for the responses even the one from Job´s Comforter ! It´s good to get a balanced set of views but also sorry to hear your op was not as successful as hoped. - I´m an upbeat sort of person so I´m looking forward to being on my bike in 2 or 3 weeks time and expect the surgery to be a full success.

I cycle two or three times a week up to 60 miles on a racing bike and other days to the shops etc on a hybrid. I took lot longer than 2 weeks to recover, probably 2 months before the pain when cycling finally went. The op cut occurs at the place where you rest your hands on dropped bars, hence the pain, made worse by the state of local roads. My surgeon told me he could not promise an improvement after the op but that it would prevent further deterioration. So it is a good idea to have the op.
I am waiting to have the other hand done.

I had it done and cycled home. The only problem I had was they did all those with right hands first then those with left hands. I was the only one with the left hand and had to wait seven hours because the staff were too bloody lazy to swap the arm support thingy on the operating table to the other side despite my being first in the queue that day. Gits.
