Hi,
thanks for the reply. We Fly out July 19th and return Aug 5th. I am reluctant to get any sort of GPS as, call me old fashioned, i like sitting in cafes and bars mulling over a map and the best way to get to places and also gives you some idea of where you have come from and an appreciation of exactly where you are!!
Touring Maps for Italy
Re: Touring Maps for Italy
Yes I used to think like that but have since found that open street maps (free) is a wondrous thing.
If you choose the right flavour of it it will also show you handy cycle routes/facilities - I think these can often be poorly signed/not at all signed in Italy.
It could I think be getting somewhat warmish/seriously hot in Sicily at that time of year - have you allowed for this?

Re: Touring Maps for Italy
Hi, yeah cycled the last 3 summers in Sardinia, Southern Spain and Northern Spain so used to the heat and we try to start early and finish early although quite like the warm weather!!
Want to stick to the maps so anyone else out there throw any ideas on which is best if wanting campsites??

Ditto - my touring methodology is that I have only a vague idea of where i will be at the end of each day - since the demise of campsite overprints on a lot of maps that are easily bought in the UK I have not really cracked it apart from walking into the first decent bookshop in whatever country I am in and going thro all the maps until i find one that has campsites marked - these days i tend to carry more than one campsite resource (whereas I used to just rely on Michelin maps for France (and quite a few other countries).
some countries eg Poland I have bought a "campsite map" and used that in parallel to my day today map -not that reliable - not published or updated that often
I did download a load of waypoints for campsites onto my netbook and memory map - useful - for night before planning (I have to be very desperate to get the netbook out when I am on the road) but not always reliable - Ditto checking on Google maps if I can get wi-fi.
Early on and late in the year - ADAC or Michelin camping bricks are useful as give when campsites are open.

Re: Touring Maps for Italy
OK thanks for that, Looks like i may end up scribbling down sites onto my 6 different Michelin 1;200,000 maps then!! Not ideal but am not going down the GPS route...and my phone doesn't even have internet so wi-fi means nothing to me either!! I just wanted a good old fashioned map with campsites on but seems they are being taken over pretty quickly by modern technology!
Thanks
