Au contraire... varicose veins, myriad bruises, chunky calves, milk bottle white - some legs (mine!) need to be hidden. So, on the odd day it's warm enough for me to even consider shorts - I'll only wear them once I'm well away from home!

I hope you folks who don't feel the cold appreciate how lucky you are!

What's to understand? Why cover something that isn't cold?

I do cover my arms (and hands) when cycling long before I consider covering my legs, my arms get cold at much warmer temperatures, but then they're not doing anything.

And I do the reverse - I will have shorts + knee warmers or 3/4 tights on unless the temperature is around 18C/65F or above but I'll often have short sleeves on, or long sleeves pushed up to the elbow. But that suits my body - my knees ache if they get cold & my arms sweat - the other day I had my waterproof jacket on for the last few miles home when it wasn't actually raining* & at when I stopped at the end the jacket was dry outside, the inside of the body was fairly dry but the inside of the arms were practically dripping. Riding with a group I will usually be one of the first with my arms exposed & almost always the last with my knees exposed. :D

Rick.

(*You know the sort of day where it starts raining & then stops once you've stopped to put a waterproof on but you then aren't sure if its going to rain again but it doesn't because you keep the jacket on!)

Nearly the same for me though I did wear my long sleeve top. It's been so long since I last wore one that I need to get used to wearing it again, I'll have to do the same with my jacket.

Cold skin on the outside is not a cold muscle, it will influence such but if you don't understand about why warm/er muscles react better to strenuous exersize then there's no point furthering the discussion.

I understand perfectly, the problem is they're not cold. Not on the outside, nor on the inside.
Worse, as I exercise they get too hot, hence the reason I make no attempt to cover them.
As I said, what's there to understand? I'm not seeing the problem, you need to keep your legs warm, I don't.

I started club cycling in Cheshire 35 years ago, and all the older riders then were insistent that you covered up immediately after racing, even in July and August. Well it was the frozen north!

I rode most of an Audax last Saturday before bringing out the longs for the last hour or two - first time this year. I switched back to longs for the commuting ride a few days later. Winter, here we come!

Actually, I do sometimes wear shorts in our Methodist church :D

It's just out on the road that those older riders' words about protecting your legs come back to me.

I'm doing my rides from when the sun rises at the weekends, I'm still in short sleeves and shorts, but I benefit from not being that fit and a lot of blubber insulation, wearing anything else when the temperature is like this will just see me sweating to the point it's uncomfortable. This is perfect temperatures for me, just wish I could make the sun rise earlier. :(
