Where Next?

Post by Perfectcircles »

I have recently experienced a most wonderful 11 day 'tour de France' enjoying warm sunny weather (early Sept) and absolutely stunning scenery. It was my third 'end to end' adventure having tackled JOGLE and Malin Head to Mizen Head (Ireland) over the last two summers.

Can anyone suggest an idea for another European tour (another 'end to end' would be good although not essential) that has the potential to match my experience in France or even surpass it!??

The Rhine cycle route is brilliant, I did it over 14 days in July from Andermatt to Rotterdam, could be an option.

The Pyrenees coast to coast might be a nice one :)

If you love France, there are 9 official 'diagonales' and the terrain is very diverse.
Can't get on to the FFCT site at the moment, but see

amongst others.

What about Iberian West to East? Something like Lisbon, Madrid, Barcelona? About 800-900 miles so similar to LEJOG.

Thinking of doing that (though the other way round) next year - any tips/good websites?

I was impressed by Bulgaria, Montenegro and Bosnia this year. The gorges in the last two are incredible. And they're cheap (beer 1€ a pint). Bosnia and Bulgaria both have interesting capitals too. There's no obvious end to end but I'm sure you could invent one.

The Danube through Germany and Austria is wonderful - by all accounts it gets even more interesting as you go further east.

Rhine and Black Forest, Danube and Black Forest.
Iberian end to ends etc as suggested by others.
Scandinavian end to arctic circle.

you want to pick up the Esterbauer/bikeline guides - 3 books, good detail, accomodation, sites etc.

Riding up stream you will of course be riding into the sun. There are some boring bits and some nice scenery on mostly well surfaced route.
Convention? what's that then?

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm pondering the idea of the Danube into Austria then dropping down along another river to Salzburg. I'd like to kick off at Calais (or home, Nottingham) and wonder about a south easterly diagonal ride to Strasbourg as the first leg. I did wonder about cycling up to (or starting at) Rotterdam and going down the Rhine first but this might be too ambitious given I've only got about 14 days to play with.

I'd like it to be memorable for the right reasons ie lovely scenery, quiet roads etc. Has this loose plan got some potential do you think?
