What word do I mean???

Post by Alex L »

My mind has gone blank. What word do I mean.

Not used anymore, outdated.

Starts with de... I think.

Obsolete?

(On the basis that when I say "it starts with D" it usually begins with a K.)

I'd agree with obsolete (Audax67's version)

Some that begin with d in addition to defunct, are dated, dead, démodé and disused, although I think obsolete is best for what you seem to want.

(Deprecated means something else. Depreciated might be a bit nearer but it's hardly a synonym for obsolete. The same goes for deteriorated.)

Deprecated was what I was thinking of. It was my bad explanation but obsolete was what I was trying to say. Thank you all :D

According to Chambers 20C:

deprecate: to try to ward off by prayer; to desire earnestly the prevention or removal of; (and more along the same lines I'm too idle to type.)

PS I have a copy of Chambers Synonyms and Antonyms which I mainly use when the brain locks up in mid-crossword. I find it much better than something like Roget's Thesaurus which seems full of obsolete ( ) clichés, which might be because I bought mine around 1960

"deprecated" is used to describe computer software features that are obsolescent.
Deprecation may indicate that the feature will be removed in the future. Features are deprecated—rather than immediately removed—in order to provide backward compatibility, and give programmers who have used the feature enough time to bring their code into compliance with the new standard.

Fair enough. Current usage rules, OK. (I can only assume that the person who first adopted that usage didn't know what the word meant.)
