My 7yr old son has an Islabikes Beinn 20 large and he'd now love a pannier rack and panniers for it.. trouble is i can't find a suitable rack anywhere!
Does anyone know where i can find a nice, proper rack, preferably not pink and without a sprung clamp?

I just use a normal rack on my main 20"er. It has adjustable front arms (for want of a better phrase) that can easily reach all the way down to the mounts.

Alternatively you could have a hunt around for an old Raleigh type shopper rack...I've got one for my 'project', it fits to the normal mounts near the hub and to the central brake mount on the bridge (assuming that you have one). It does the job, but not as strong as a 'real' rack.

On my Circe Helios tandem (20" wheels) I use these bracket extensions joined to the supplied brackets of a standard Blackburn rear rack. The extensions are mounted to the rack with a bend to point towards the top rack mounts & the standard brackets linking them with the mounts (I chose that way so I didn't have to bend the standard brackets in case I wanted to use the rack on another bike).

Have a look at the Nimrod Dow Crag, short leg rack as sold by Spa Cycles. Its made for the Airnimal and is very adjustable.

My concern with a short leg rack is, although it may look better aesthetically, if you want to use it with panniers you need to be careful that they don't start interfering with the gears.

Here is my Blackburn rack fitted with an Ortlieb Front Roller pannier. There is a little spare space that you could lose below the pannier but not a huge amount.

Would that work on a kids' 20" bike? Son #1 is 8, but small for age and still fits his 20" Decathlon bike perfectly, but wants to do a bit of a tour next spring (just an overnight with about 12 miles either side!)

Just buy him a trailer and load it to maximum - make him earn his keep!
