Can anyone tell me if the bottom brackets on either or both of these machines need modifications to take a modern chainset?
I'm talking about the old 70's-80's models. I want to try to fit modern components along with wheels and tyres.

Dawes Kingpins have standard bottom brackets so no problem to fit a current version.
Raleigh 20's are non standard as above.
