Cable stop

Post by Vetus Ossa »

Here’s my problem.
I have an old frame with a pip on the top under side of the down tube to stop band on gear levers slipping. I want to run ergo levers on it (sorry purists). I was thinking of trying to find a Campag#629 clip to adapt and use, but as they seems impossible to find now I am stumped for ideas…anyone?

I dont know if it is exactly the thing you mean but I bought a Campagnolo double band on stop for £1 at my local LBS to use on my bike.

However your front STI will need an adjuster barrel. Rather than putting one in line, I have filed off part of this plastic adjustable cable stops so that it will fit on the band-on that used to hold the down tube levers.

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply. Perhaps I should explain a little more, I probably didn’t explain very well, it’s a problem I often seem to have. I am looking for a fitting of some sort for the cables from the ergo/sti levers to connect to on the top of the doen tube, as my frame has no brazed on fittings. I think it will have to be a clip jobbie of some sort?

Do you already have down tube levers fitted onto your frame?

If so are they on a band on clamp?

If I've understood your question right I think there might be something here that does what you want:

I assume that you are after an old fashioned chrome steel band that doers the same job as this

http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/origin8-clam ... prod26491/

The problem is that it will be near impossible to use your front derailleur without a method of adjusting the cable.

If you already have a bandon downtube lever set like this

http://www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php ... 0s108p1519

You can remove the downtube levers from the clamp (save them for emergencies) and with a bit of work with a file those stops I linked to earlier will fit in their place and give you adjustable cable stops.

I have found the clamp you asked about on ebay and it looks identical to the one I bought at my LBS for £1.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-Campagnolo- ... 0988566446

I dont suppose it is exactly the same though but it does the same job.

As does that origin8 from SJS cycles but it will not get your front derailleur working properly without a cable adjuster somewhere in the set up.

Like these for example.

LBS is short for local bike shop, this clamp is the sort of thing they will have in that rack on the wall in the workshop or the bottom of an old drawer.

Simple answer that I have on 4 bikes (all fitted with bar end changers ... but the concept is the same) :

Get an old-style down-tube band on pair of levers* and unbolt the levers - get a pair of Shimano downtube stops that would normally bolt onto braze ons - using shallow head M5 bolts fit the stops to the band with an aero/locknut on the outside (the bolt head needs to be low-profile to sit inside the band) - when tightened up cut/file the bolts flush with the aeronut ... then fit the band to the downtube and the stops are ready for the cables.

If that doesn't all make sense PM me and I'll send a couple of pix.

Rob

* LBS will have them in the bits box lurking under the work bench, or have a look at bikes at the local tip!

Thanks for that Rod, and it makes perfect sense. I had something like that in the back of my mind, but using campag resin stops, as they would probably be easier to shap to fit. I have to confess to being a bit of a bike tart, and would like to use a Campag band on clip is possible, but appreciate they are all much the same.
