I live opposite the village cop shop and two police houses. A few years ago we had some moron down the road with an uninsured and unlicenced banshee type motorbike. His favourite trick was to ride his bike from about 300 metres away at what sounded like flat out waking the whole village in the small hours After night after night of this, I was furious having been woken up at 2am and unable to get back to sleep. I went to the cop shop and made a complaint. They tried to fob me off. I accused them of being wimps and afraid to do their job. They got very aggressive and issued threats that I would be charged etc if I didn't shut up. I left.

A week later at 5am there was a lot of noise outside. When I looked out there were loads of coppers and police vehicles. The two coppers were missing... They were found later that day, asleep in the police car with an empty bottle of whiskey. They were sacked, the sargent was sacked and one coppers wife who was living in one of the police houses after they had split up, was chucked out. From that time on, things got sorted.

I have known lots of coppers living here, some good, some bad. The best one was an old sargent who was always cycling around the village with his helmet on. He struck terror into all the local yobs, knew all the crooks and kept an eye on them. Coppers are just like anyone else, good and bad. I am not surprised at this report, coppers can get to think they are unassailable like any moron given a job above his capability. They usually get found out at some point...

Early doors is lost on me,sorry.... Never saw it? Says its about pubs opening early?

One of them was the father of my teenage sons friend, it was quite embarrasing. Nice chap out of uniform, but when he put it on and got with a crowd a sort of macho mob culture seemed to take over. I guess a group of collegues suffered the same sort of madness when they had their poker school. Like any sort of skiving - don't get found out!

Early doors is or was a TV sitcom which was based on extremely good observation (IMO) of various characters / stereotypes, brought together in the setting of a pub. Caricatures, of course, but not much exaggerations. Two of the characters were the crew of the local police car who spent a lot of time in the backroom of the boozer, sponging off the landlord and offering in return various "concessions" one I remember being a disabled driver permit. (Like most series of this type, the story lines seemed to get more far-fetched with each series.)

Allowing for the needs of the comedy, the two PC's were remarkably like some of the older end cplleagues I remember from my early days. The typical panda car driver hasn't had time to mess about like that for a long time, and the Edmund-Davies pay rise ended the economic reasons for a lot of the scrounging.

That's right. OBJ used to be a beer brewed by Duttons.

Around here at least, it's used as a term of derision for people who have avoided "real" police work, by those who haven't. As in "He's a right OBJ merchant." No doubt the person who coined the expression "Owt bar't job" had seen OBJ beer ads. (Posters rather than telly commercials.) I've heard people say "OBB" ie "Owt bar bobbying" but that's probably because they don't know the origin of OBJ.

Some years ago Strathclyde polis had two Hillman Imps (remember them) single manned for patrolling Loch Lomondside. They were known locally as Pinky and Perky. If you do not understand this you are too young. One member of this forum may remember them from when he lived in Balloch. I have numerous scandalous stories relating to them which I could not possibly put on a public forum since most of them are true.
