There are some interesting points made here about the ‘acceptability’ of ultra-bright lighting. Lately on both this forum and the other one (YACF), there has been lots of talk about the exceedingly bright LED torches and headlamps available for little money on ebay. These are terrifically bright but are they really appropriate for us cyclists? I’m of the opinion that a well designed beam pattern such as you can get from some of the Philips or B&M lamps, will give a more useful spread of light and are far more friendly to on-coming vehicles, both two & four wheeled.
BTW, I do have an ever deepening dislike of dogs on cycle paths, I can control my bike but half of these dog owners can’t seem to control there animals.
Home truths?

Too right - some even being towed, or ridden alongside by people on bikes.
More than once I've loudly questioned just how much they care about their animals.
It's just the mildest irritation on a Sunny Sunday afternoon, but during the rush hour in the dark ?
Also, having tried it before, I wouldn't even set foot on the Bristol to Bath path in the dark without wearing hi-viz and carrying lights.
In fact I now have a completely different route for walking.
My eye only just caught a bunch of pedestrians last week and my video showed they were carrying a "light" - but of course it was a mobile phone.

My cheap camera gives a fairly close impression of just how invisible they were - with what looks like at least one leg straying over to "my side" of the path...
Re: Home truths?
Yeah, but who cares about anyone else? Not my concern...
Am I talking about:
a) Bright lights with antisocial beam patterns.
b) Uncontrolled hell-hounds.
c) Pretty much everybody.
