Bearing in mind that this is about 2014, I don't think the exact details of what happened some forty years earlier is too much of a concern. Whether the bypass in question was newly-opened or recently-opened seems to be here nor there. (If you look at the newsreels of the official opening of one of the early motorways (probably the M1) it had been in use for long enough for there to be roadworks in progress (with far fewer cones than are used today. ) One way or another, that first try was a flop.

There's nothing intrinsically wrong with racing uo and down the same bit of road - perhaps this experience gave them the idea for using the Champs Elysées for the final stage when they stopped using an outdoor track. With a decent crowd and something to race for, any old bit of road will do.

Things have changed and now lots of peopleare keen for the race to come here again. Having it centred on Leeds (and there are other cities in the north of England which would have been good too) will put it within easy reach of a lot of people and will offer challenging terrain, even if it's not hors catégorie climbing.

The leg heading east is one heck of a climb.

The rail line that runs parallel to the bypass used to need two steam locomotives to haul the passenger trains up the incline. No doubt Eddie M could have done the job on his tod! :D

We will have a lot of media hype in the next 18 months. The sports section of the Daily T had a pic the other day of Wiggo in yellow on a certain dual carriageway in Paris. The caption made no mention of Cav on his shoulder. For me the real significance of the pic was that the yellow jersey usually treats the final stage as a victory parade but here he was preparing for the rainbow jersey's devastating sprint. 8) Just as well Wiggo remembered not to give his former madison partner a handsling.

We'll have to put up with the media trying to catch up after decades of ignoring cycling and just hope that Team Sky will continue to deliver the goods. (It's worth mentioning that JB "Jock" Wadley used to be the Daily T's cycling correspondent and in the bad old days, his reports were for some years the only daily source of reliable info about the TdeT available in this country, apart from French newspapers and French radio. He was succeeded by Phil L.)

Leeds to Scarborough via N York Moors on the first leg eh?
Up Rosedale Chimney Bank hopefully, and TC can help with the luggage! :D

If the government were to put a £1 tax on saying "It's supposed to be the Tour de France" their financial problems will be over.

I wouldn't bank on Rosedale Chimney Bank ( ) Bike racing up there has been the cause of a lot of complaint before: The Kelloggs (or whatever the TofB was called at the time) went up there and there were complaints about the road surface being painted with slogans and spectators on the grass verges. IMO the basic problem is that everybody wants the money from vistors but not the visitors themselves - all rather infra dig, with far too many proles. I imagine the route will already be pretty much settled but we don't want a repeat of Box Hill. There are plenty of pretty sharp hills where there would be no NIMBY noses put out of joint. Sutton Bank would be ideal but it's facing the wrong way.

I had a significant birthday last year and was treated by the family to a long weekend in Paris. How fortunate that i chose the weekend that the tour finished. I was on the barriers at the top of the Champs near the "Arc de Triumph" and saw the riders come around on every lap. Cav was glued on Brad's wheel for every lap. Here's a prime example which i managed to capture. I have had to reduce the file size to get it on here so may not be very sharp. 2 things struck me about the Champs - It get quite steep as it ramps up to the Arc and the cobbled surface is appalling - no surprise that they all fight to get onto the smooth slabs in the gutter.

Often with the Tour de France roads are resurfaced along the route. I wonder if this will be the case here? Given that we don't usually like doing road projects on a timescale shorter than 10 years I doubt it :(

A cracking pic and I'm very jealous of your weekend in Paris.

You've captured the reason why the race is coming to "these shores" again. After years in the cycling widerness followed by occasional explots, we've now got the sport by the scruff of it's neck. The French cherish their race and like people to treat it with respect. The best way to do that is to win. I'm repeating myself here but the yellow jersey preparing the sprint for the rainbow jersey on the Champs Elysées is the stuff of cycling history. Let's hope the success continues, especially in 2014.

A few years ago, there was a picture question on the BBC's A Question of Sport. The picture was of Chris Boardman, Bernard Hinault and IIRC Big Mig. Anyway, the question was "Name the French racing cyclist in the picure who one the TdeF five times." With Chris B in the pic, it cut the odds down. Anyway, one of the team captains proudly announce that he only knew the name of one racing cyclistst which was Eddy Merckx so that would have to be his answer. David Ginola, who usually has Sue Barker getting iherself in a tizzy, was flabbergasted. His comment was something like "How can you think that Eddy Merckx is French? The French rider is Bernard Hinault..." baffled shaking of head.

In case there is anybody reading who wouldn't know Bernrad Hinault from their elbow, he's the chap who acts as master of ceremonies for the TdeF stage winner and jersey presentations. The publicity women present the jersey then while everybody is having a kiss and a cuddle, he does the velcro up on the back. 8)

I can't imagine that even Leeds City Council would want a repeat of the Leeds Classic finish when Max Sciandri went into the pothole at the finish in front of Leeds Town Hall. I still feel embarrassed about that.

years ago I went through Paris during a long tour, and I couldn't resist riding up and down the Champs Élysées a few times, as well as round the Arc du Triomphe Etoile. Only afterwards did I realise that the latter was in fact illegal; it was certainly ill-advised, since it is one of the busiest and most messed-up pieces of road I have ever seen. The traffic was phased to be allowed onto the roundabout, but then have to stop. Every time it starts again, they are all Alain Prost for a few moments...

The gutters are smooth, but under normal circumstances, dangerous, also. The other thing that struck me was that the wind can be quite strong; on the less steep downhill section, it can still be rather hard work if it is a south-easterly wind; it is no wonder they get so strung out.

cheers

I wouldn't bet on it. When I asked the Highways Department about this at a meeting a few months ago, and said I believed the organisers would require most, if not all, of the route to be resurfaced, they clearly thought I was joking.

Does anyone know what the organiser's standards are and how they are enforced? Or will the route actually stick to A roads as they are the only reasonably surfaced routes in the county.

The Tour de France is watched by hundreds of millions around the world, Yorkshire will be on show, the least they could do is invest in that with a bit of tarmac where needed.

And that doesn't mean filling in potholes, crashes in the early days are easy enough, but if they are caused by a bad road surface then Yorkshire will be painted in a very bad light indeed.

They'll have 18 months between the route announcement and the start of the race, plenty of time to asses the entire route and put in resurfacing.

We've heard quite a bit about the bid which secured the Yorkshire start. Whenever this subject has been reported on local BBC, they've shown the same mish/mash of library TdeF footage, including one crummy edit where the race director is seen standing up in his car and waving the start flag, immediately followed by a stage sprint.

I hope the video of Yorkshire used to support the successful bid will be broadcast on telly. If anybody spots this in the schedules, please post to let us all know. :D

Shame they couldn't combine with the Scottish bid and have the first stage from Edinburgh to Yorkshire though.
Would it be a good idea for the CTC York Rally/Show organisers to move their event a week to coincide with the start of the tour, giving those that have to travel a long way the chance to see both?
