Hi,
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... uture.htmlExtract : -
The investigation centres on a dinner in Melbourne, Victoria, in February which Mrs Blair addressed as part of her speaking tour of Australia and New Zealand to promote her book on Downing Street wives.
It raised £80,000. But the Consumer Affairs Victoria watchdog has confirmed that at least 90 per cent of the cash was absorbed in paying for the dinner and Mrs Blair's fee.

A lot of people who get a bit of recognition in the Honours Lists have done their fair whack of otherwise unrecognised volunteering at a local level. IIRC, it was John Major's govt which decided that their appropriate award would be the MBE, rather than the BEM. I noticed this time round that the BEM has re-emerged for these salt-of-the-earth (plebeian ?) type of folk. I'm not a regular reader so I don't know when or why this happened.
I see that Mr Ho-Ho is now Sir Bernard Ho-Ho.

According to Wiki, BEM's (which were for ordinary plebs like us, as opposed to the rich or famous) were presented not by the Queen but by some underling. Major declared
"let us be classless" (or words to that effect) and hey presto! converted all the BEMs by the process of a simple anagram, into MBEs, which
were conferred by HM. Increasing her workload somewhat!
I suppose HM got a bit tired of all that shaking hands with the Great Unwashed (not to say plebs), so the govt of today decided to change them back into BEMs. See also
here for a bit of insight...

Whilst it is justified by some by saying many " ordinary people " receive awards if they do they get the lesser ones but the rich and famous are far better rewarded.
Does riding a bike with a particular skill really justify a knighthood and if it does what did those those who fought in WW1 and latterly WW11 deserve then.
If only my wife would agree to go and live in France and then I could get away from the awful class system in this country and hopefully the celebrity culture that is prevalent here.
Bravo sir, (with a little 's'). My sentiments exactly.
Being rewarded for something you CHOOSE to do isn't the same as being rewarded for something you are compelled or expected to do.
I haven't made this comment to start a further debate, as debate invariably leads to opinions being further entrenched. I am simply stating what I think, and isn't an invitation to others to try to change my mind.
Kelly.

Thread seems to have been infiltrated by some post-festive humbuggery and messed up quotes, making it hard to work out who said what, what they might have meant, and who was intended to take offence. Thus has been pruned.

Certainly no one should get a so called honour for something they're paid to do.

I thought it was Judges that are called "Your Honour".
Mp's are supposed to be "The Honorable Member".
Does the Honors list really matter? Especially after a certain Mr Forsyth said if he was not made a sir he would send it back.
At least Ken said he would not accept a badge for doing his job.
