Need a reasonable tent for <£100

Post by R-evans »

Anybody recommend a good tent for a month ride that will last?

Been looking at the Coleman Cobra 2 or maybe a Vango Banshee.

Will pay more if it's really a must, but prefer not to.

Cheers

I'd go for a Wild Country Zephyros 2.
Same as a Terra Nova Laser Comp 2, but cheaper and not as light.

You get what you pay for, cheap generally means poorer materials, more weight, less function, shorter life.

I like to have an element of 'security' in my home from home, so good waterproofness, plenty of head clearance, ample storage, seperate kitchen, good ventilation, ease of erection (sic) and of course robust enough for when the going gets rough! A good tent will last years so the extra cost is offset by not needing to replace every couple of seasons!

My advice would be a two man Vaude Taurus series tent - plenty of room, reasonable weight, high durability, you can get some good deals if you look around, more than £100 its true but as i said before, you get what you pay for.
Convention? what's that then?

I had one of these. http://www.outdoorexperience.co.uk/manu ... e.tpl.html That other Coleman is a bit of a coffin. This one has side AND end entrances, plenty of room and height. I now have the x3 which is even roomier and not much heavier. Great in wind and rain.

I've been using a Coleman Bedrock, cost £28, okay as a solo tent.

Wild Country have done well for me; strong and well-enough made for the price and lightish too.

I have a Vango Banshee which I got for a festival as I didn't want to take my Hilleberg or Terra Nova Laser. I have to say I was very impressed with it. Easy to pitch, light enough etc. only thing I would say is that the porch is a bit small, but it does have storage in the front addressable from the inner tent.

Coleman avoir x2s a great tent. Porch big enough for panniers, rear and side entrance.

GoOutdoors do the cheapest Vango Banshee 200.
2 man but really more comfortable for 1 and kit.
Light weight and in your price range and a decent tent for the money

Another vote for the Banshee 200. I've had one for a few years mainly for the odd night but used it 8 straight nights last "summer". Despite the general wetness of the trip with careful packing it stayed dry inside even when packed damp. My only two criticisms were that it is a bit low for sitting up in and secondly the model I have is a pitch inner first (with the poles between the outer & inner) but they have now redesigned it to pitch outer first (or all at once).

If you have a Go Outdoors card (or get one for £5) you can play their price match game and get it cheaper than the £99 quoted - find the cheapest online, in stock price & submit it on the website where if accepted they will give you a price 10% cheaper. It does work & I used that to get a thermarest neoair at a very good price. I found the Banshee on offer for £84.95 here. If Go Outdoors accept that price to match you could potentially get it from them for £76.45.

I can highly recommend the Banshee. I have the 300 which is great for x1, OK for x2 and would be for close friends only x3! It's light, well made, quick to put up and take down (I now leave the inner and outer attached when on tour) and has stood up well to high winds and heavy rain / hail; what's not to like?

If you can wait until Autumn / Winter when you can pick them up online very cheaply - I got mine about 3 years ago for £45 new!

As the above have said, vango Banshee is good. Have used it for two tours, 1 was for almost a month. As the others have said the space is a premium, I have the 300 and it was fine for myself and brother plus our gear but when I've taken it hiking with 3 of us we generally leave the bags in a tarp outside the tent as there is only enough room for 3 people to sleep and room for no more!

Found it very good when I did solo touring, space was good, could throw all the luggage in when it was raining and jump in after with space to spare.

Not the cheapest but as with a lot of things you pay for what you get.
