Security etching on cycles

Does anyone have any recommendations for security etching?

I ask as I'm in the process of setting up a cycle promotion event and have asked the local police to help.
Their Crime Prevention Officer says you cannot etch onto aluminium frames as it can weaken them.
I find that hard to believe.

Does anyone have any info that could refute (or support) this, or references to any alternative database type systems that police have used in crime prevention roles?

Are UV marker pens a viable alternative?

what about microdots???

i know raleigh do it in conjunction with other agencies and organizations and do a security package i think, they used to anyway.
