I'll give some background details first . . then i'll ask a question that will have all of you sensible people out there, throwing your hands to the heavens in exacerbation
1. Rigid framed aluminium MTB .
2. 26'' wheels . . to be fitted with 1.75'' smoother road tyres .
3. Bike will be used on relatively flat terrain only . . rides of only 5 to 10ml radius .
4. To be used by a 70yr old male,(me) . . who is reasonably fit
5. Very limited budget for project . . it's a question of what we've got or scrounged,is what we've got to work with .
One of my fellow scroungers has found a 52t crankset . Very good condition . So we're going to use it,but i suspect that it's far from ideal . But as i've said, that's what we've got to work with .
The question is,(and i do appreciate that this is one of those "how long is a piece string" kind)how many teeth on the rear freewheel sprocket would be practical

Manythanks for that . Have found a 21t sprocket made by Raleigh which is abit more expensive, but is still within budget . Will need some info on suitable chains soon .

If the bike is not going to be thrashed up hill and down dale and used only moderately, then the cheapest one you can get away with!

i'd think that the sprocket you have would be marked as 3/32nds of an inch. as for chains pretty much any chain marked 5-6-7-8 'speeds' would do fine.

Or indeed a basic singlespeed/hub gear chain. (1/8").

I'd use 1/8" chain on a singlespeed even if it is with 3/32" cogs. Much better...
cheers

Brucey . 1/8" chain it is then .
Manythanks for the advice . We will let you know how we get on .

don't however try to run a 3/32nds chain if your freewheel sprocket says 1/8th - just checking that you know that - as it won't work.
