Lightweight jacket

Post by Milfred Cubicle »

Can anyone recommend a lightweight cycling jacket for under £35? I'm looking for showerproof, preferrably a bright colour, and it must roll up small enough to fit in a jersey pocket. I appreciate I won't get 100% waterproof at this price, but water resistant would do.

I think you probably can get a an almost totally waterproof jacket dirt cheap. The problem then would be that condensation would leave you just as wet as if you had ridden with no jacket at all, and a fair bit warmer. Good ventilation and breathability are part of what shoves the price up (as well as expensive brand names) and no matter how good the jacket, as soon as you start to work, the condensation starts. Cycling must be just about the biggest test of breathability that any garment has to pass.

I am very fond of my Montaine Featherlight.

So much so that I bought another one before they ran down the stock to just the two sizes they now have on offer. I have had my first one for six years and it gets worn more than any other.

Decathlon sell lightwieght showerproof jackets which are a lot cheaper than the "famous" brands.

Yes in my experience a cheap even medium price 'waterproof' is a totally false economy as they get so wet inside. A poncho is one solution while you save up for a breathable waterproof.

SJS have some really good offers on Montane at the moment if you are quick.

I'm a trendy consumer. Just look at my GT-I9300 using hovercraft full of eels. 2

They certainly do and seem just like what the OP is looking for:

I like my Monatane H2O which is totally waterproof, as breathable as you can get, packs up really small and cost me £50 from TK Maxx.
