Don't like using bells either, but it was a bit of souvenir 'bling', purchased without thinking through the conversion rate!

Have actually got a bell fitted at the mo, but it's only as a last resort- encountered some folk last year, who seem to take more notice to the fact that you've not got a bell than that you've slowed right down, gone onto the grass and politely made yourself known- and been heard often. Ringing as I cycle on is kinda perversely entertaining at this point.

Some folk just love to be outraged. But then certain media relies on that factoid.

Just a little comment ..........................

I have a bell, but TBH it's not that good so I took it off.
It didn't look nice and it didn't sound nice and it wasn't very loud.

One day, riding along, dinging away, approaching a group of people, dinging away lots and lots, they never heard me until I was almost on top of them. Eventually one of them turned round and saw me and said, "I wondered what that ringing noise was!"

Hopefully, the new bell will be heard in time.

Yes, but it looks nice as well as sounding nice. :D

Can you point us in the direction of a cheaper bell - that is also effective, looks good, decent clamping, and doesn't rattle internally?

SJS have a good selection. http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/bells-dept11_pg1/ The King of Ding is quite good, but the clamp won't fit on my 'bars. The Zefal Ping is similar to my old one and is virtually useless.

Don't forget to add P+P to SJS prices. Wiggle don't charge delivery, but they don't have much of a range.

The warmth of the human voice is a joy to behold!

Utterly agree of course.

Trouble is, if you're riding along a lane where for instance a dog-walker has the dog on a long long lead and you're doing a decent speed, just speaking isn't loud or effective enough - you'd have to shout!

The human voice is fine if you're going slowly along a path, but on the road it often isn't.

I only splashed out £14.45 :D

By buying two at the same time whilst the postage remained a reasonable £2.99

Not everyone will hear a bell, but many will and from a useful distance. Ring in good time. Give people time to react and you time to observe a response (if any). What's the objection to a bell? I've had walkers thank me for using a bell - can't be bad for reducing antagonism between users - and blood pressure. On drop bars I position the bell on the quill stem.

Mine arrived with the post at lunchtime, and I've just fitted it.
Easy done, but I had to re-adjust the headset of course. Also, I had to do away with the washer between the top race and the locknut coz there weren't enough threads available.

Test ride tomorrow. Looks good and sounds great. Very pleased indeed. :D
