Thank you for recommending specific tyres. I had a look on Planet X site, but don't think they have any of the tyres in the size I need available at the moment. Is the size of the tyre I need for my Galaxy always 700c X 35mm ? Is it a 29" tyre too ? Ideally I would change the wheels too, but I guess that could be quite costly.

Your rims could take a 29" tyre but I doubt that a Galaxy frame could.

29" is a marketing term for 700c FAT tyres used for MTB riding.

Unfortunately the favourites from Planet X are out of stock at the moment.

Galaxy's will take a 700x35mm tyre or less ie; 700x32,28,25mm.The 26er tyres are big as Meic says and are knobbly offroad type tyres for MTB riding, which will slow you down considerably on tarmac.

It's news to me if he did :? .
One things for sure he wouldn't have to keep slowing down and speeding up in traffic stopping at junctions or riding up and down hills on poor road surfaces with huge ever increasing sizable potholes, etc, etc.

What wheels (rims/hubs) do you have at the moment?

As said above to get lighter wheels is quite costly depending on what you have.
135mm hubs are going to be MTB type and probably Shimano although there are others.
An Lx hub pair with Chrina rims from Spa is about £157.
http://www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php ... 0s178p2235

Then plus tyres and tubes and you are getting on for £200.

Some idea of weights.
Chrina rims, 105 hubs, 8 speed cassette, with 25mm tyres complete. = Front 3lb.3ozs.(1434gms). Rear 4lb.6ozs.(2003gms).
The Rigida Chrina has a recommended max' tyre of 28.
You can chose 36/32 spoke count although I have no idea of weight saving for 4 spokes
If comparing weights, on the WEB, then wheel weight will be quoted bare.

Regarding tyres, a folding version will be lighter than a wired rigid one.
The lighter you go then generally the less puncture resistance.

Thanks for the recommendation on wheels. £150 is quite a lot for me at the moment, still good to know though.
I don't know the wheels I have on my Galaxy. They are the ones that came with it in 2004 new. They are Mavic and the are black.
Thanks, Alastair

Mavic don't make tremendously heavy rims; thus probably there is little extra weight that can come off the wheels (for daily use, anyway), but plenty to come off the tyres and tubes.

This suggests that if your wheels are in good shape, concentrating on tyres is indeed the thing to do.

cheers

I measured the weight for my Galaxy tyres and wheels:

700cX32 Scwalbe marathon Tyre = 600g
Inner Tube = 175g
Front wheel (hub=HS308) = 1.06kg
Rear wheel (hub = FH-MC18) including 9 speed cassette = 1.69kg

Summary:
Front wheel complete(includes tyre, tube and wheel) = 775g + 1.06kg = 1.78kg
Rearwheel complete(includes tyre, tube and wheel, cassette) = 775g + 1.69kg = 2.46kg

Conclusion : My wheels complete are approx. 350g heavier for front and 460g for rear. Overall, 800g heavier.
Kojak tyres at say 330g each would save over two wheels, 540g, making 260g heavier than lightwheel sets.

Any recommendations for light, reliable inner tubes and how much weight would I save ?
Alastair

there are loads of tubes out there, but as a benchmark michelin airstop is a good reference point. Reckon on ~130g ea for 28-32mm width, and about 100g for a 25 width tube.

Really lightweight tubes can go down to ~60g ea but these may not work in wider tyres and do seem to puncture slightly more easily. They often don't hold air as well, either.

cheers

Another tyre that's very puncture resistant for it's weight and lasts, is Panaracer Ribmo(700x32mm

+1

I've got over 5K on mine and still not getting flats

I just bought some fresh rubber yesterday and I thought of this thread as I handed over the cash.

Old stock Specialized 'All condition' 28mm tyres. (non armadillo version) 350g ea. An LBS was shifting them @£10 a pop; I couldn't say no. I'm hoping that (unlike the Armadillo version) they will roll nicely. I have (of course) no special expectations of puncture resistance....

cheers

I did the TransAm with these. After about 2500 miles they had worn the black rubber thin, uncoloured stuff was showing through in one spot and I started to get punctures. Mind you it was a heavily loaded bike. Up to then no punctures.
